Тред про уникальный русский культурный объект собрал много комментов. А на форум я запостила японский объект.

Японоживущие: вы наверняка знаете, так что делитесь своим мнением по поводу этого объекта.

An explanation of what it is: it is a small wooden box.
Where can you get it? The box is usually given to people at a hospital.
Old custom? Yes. It has been practiced in Japan for many years.
Well-known? Yes. If Japanese see it, they will definitely know what it is.

Что это: маленькая деревянная коробочка.
Где ее берут: обычно получают в больнице.
Старая традиция: да. В Японии ей много лет.
Известный объект: да. Если его увидят японцы, они точно будут знать, что это.

Wow, it's really intriguing. So that's how Sherlock feels, hm...

My first thought it's a box given to the happy parents when their child is born. Maybe the name of the child is kept there, or maybe the name and the "technical characteristics" of the child (such as weight and height). Or the footprint of the kid could be stored here. Probably it brings luck to the person if he or she keeps this box as long as possible.

My second thought it's the box for the hair after the first haircut of the kid.

All in all I think it's something that brings luck for the owner :)
